Transportation Livable Communities Initiative The "Indonesia Livable Communities Initiative" focuses on building capacity in Indonesian cities for addressing the design and public relations concerns for successful implementation of bus rapid transit (BRT), transport demand management (TDM) and non-motorized transport (NMT). A demonstration BRT line and related NMT facilities will be developed later. The demonstration line can later be expanded to a wider area of the city, and replicated by other cities who experience the system. Growing evidence suggests that an affordable solution which addresses both the air quality and the traffic congestion problems consists of bus rapid transit (BRT) combined with traffic demand management (TDM) and measures to increase non-motorized travel (NMT). BRT can provide similar performance to metro systems at a fraction of the construction cost and with no operating subsidies. BRT systems, combined with TDM and NMT measures, have succeeded in shifting passengers from taxis and motorcycles back to buses, reducing both congestion and air pollution Recent efforts by the Institute for Transportation and Development Program (ITDP) with Pelangi and IIT Delhi’s TRIPP have convinced municipal authorities in Jakarta and Delhi to finally move forward with BRT plans, and other cities have also taken an interest. These systems can be greatly enhanced with simultaneous TDM and NMT measures. This project, Indonesia Liveable Communities Initiative, would focus on building capacity within these cities for addressing the design and public relations concerns for successful implementation of BRT, TDM and NMT. A demonstration BRT line and related NMT facilities will be developed for each city, Jakarta and Delhi. The demonstration line can later be expanded to a wider area of the city, and replicated by other cities who experience the system. Although the Provincial Governor of Jakarta is currently developing the BRT (busway) system in Jakarta, while Pelangi is working very closely with this initiative, this does not mean that the project is part of the Government's project. This is truly an independent partnership. Regarding to this project, there are many activities which have been held to improved the capacity building and public awareness on public transportation and air pollution. Those are as follow: |
